Northern Bluefin Tuna
(Thunnus thynnus)
25 years ago large Atlantic bluefin tuna (250 to over 1,000 pounds)
might sell for a penny a pound for catfood, if it sold at all. Today,
that same bluefin tuna can sell for well over $100 per pound, mainly
due to the popularity of sushi and sashimi around the world. In 2001
a 440 pound bluefin sold for $173,600 in the Japanese Tsukiji fish
market - thats about $394 per pound! Unlike most fish which are cold-blooded,
bluefin are warm blooded. They can swim as fast as 50 miles per hour
in short bursts and they can live as long as 30 years. |

fish market located at The Tisbury Marketplace,
79 Beach Road in Vineyard Haven, on Martha's Vineyard Island,

and shipping under rigidly controlled conditions. We pride ourselves
on the quality of our merchandise. We've also done a complete renovation
to our harbor front store, adding spacious ordering counters, increased
product capacity, large lobster tanks so you can pick your sizes,
a delicious fresh sushi service, and a tasty take out counter with
an ample outdoor picnic area for you to enjoy lunch. We've got 'The
Net Result Martha's Vineyard' T-shirts and hats for your self or
as gifts, and a great selection of related condiments, relishes,
and food products to make your stay by the sea very satisfying!
